Taking Lives
Taking Lives
Starring Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, Kiefer Sutherland,
Gena Rowlands, Olivier Martinez, Tcheky Karyo

A grisly murder of a man found in a Montreal construction site brings in FBI agent Illeana Scott (Angelina Jolie) to help out.

Evidently her area of expertise is picking up vibes from the killer by laying down in the shallow grave where his latest victim was placed, as that’s where the French/Canadian Inspector and his surly homicide investigator (Olivier Martinez-Unfaithful) find her.

She follows up with the now obligatory trip to the autopsy lab where we get to view the bashed remains of a body, where she can discover clues. A number of similar deaths occur and the cops are stumped. That is, until James Costa (Ethan Hawke), a local artist, catches the killer in the act and develops a sketch of him.

Jolie does most of her acting with her big eyes. She whispers her lines and goes about her duties with her lips in a continual pout (which on her looks darned good). She is totally believable as an agent and is perfectly capable of taking over for Ashley Judd whenever she passes on her next woman-in-control film.

There’s some twists and turns that add to the suspense and Gena Rowlands as the serial killer’s mother, is a colorful addition.

Taking Lives has everything a good thriller needs; a series of murders, a baffled police force, a beautiful heroine and a few surprises.
