Emma Thompson plays Nanny McPhee a nanny that is not your typical sweet baby-sitter. Looking like something you'd meet in your worst nightmare, she's got a few child-rearing tricks up her sleeve.

Nanny has a hairy unibrow, warts, a single tooth that hangs over her bottom lip and a nose that appears to cover almost half of her face. She arrives out of nowhere at English widower Cedric Brown's (Colin Firth) house to help take care of his seven out-of-control children, while he looks for a new wife.

The kids are so obnoxious, they've already chased away numerous nannies and think they'll have an easy go at Nanny McPhee. But, Nanny is prepared, because besides her looks which should scare any kid straight, she also has a cane that she uses to keep them in line. She bangs it on the floor and magic comes to life putting the kids in their place and teaching a lesson or two at the same time.

Thompson wrote the screenplay from the "Nurse Matilda" books by Christianna Brand. She's terrific in the lead, but sometimes her grotesque looks distract from a scene.

Veteran costars Derek Jocobi and the wonderful Angela Lansbury as Aunt Adelaide, add a touch of class.

Children in the audience will have plenty to like in Nanny McPhee. The kids are fun, even though when they're bad, they are very noisy and over-the-top. The story should keep their attention throughout. Adults will enjoy the character actors in this witty and entertaining children's film.
