Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

The 1994 hit was a road picture that actually had some thought behind it and let Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels go from Providence to Aspen in reckless, unsocial abandon with a briefcase full of ransom money.  Now the formative years of Carrey's Lloyd Christmas and Daniels' shaggy harry Dunne are on view in the stagnant witless Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.

The story of these two in high school in 1986 as a series of lame sketches on stupidity, it burrows further beneath the title mostly because of its amateurish self-mockery, a kind of slapdash doodling.

This pestering prequel stars unknowns Derek Richardson as Harry, put into public high school by his cocktail waitress mom (Mimi Rogers), and Eric Christian Olsen (The Hot Chick) who dyed his hair and lost 20 pounds to be the banged-haired, chipped-tooth Lloyd.

But, there's a belief that these young actors have displayed an innocence and charm from this execrable material as they imitate Carrey and Daniels to a tee.

Drawn into this story are comedy veterans like Eugene Levy (A Mighty Wind), Luis Guzman (Anger Management) and Cheri Oteri (Scary Movie).  Levy is smarmy Principal Collins, who with Oteri's lunch and girlfriend Ms. Heller, creates a "Special Needs" class with the funding to be embezzled for their dream Hawaiian condo.

The popular school cheerleader and newspaper reporter, Jessica acted with some vigor by newcomer Rachel Nichols chases the croaked principal.

The scary thing is that how attentive Miller is to details of panning fashion of the 80's with hits like "Eye of the Tiger" and "Whip It."  Yet, this scatological fest just doesn't have an original thought on its scattered brain.  There will be those who'll be looking for something fresh on that famous powerful laxative scene with Daniels, but this more puerile, exhaustive revisiting of Harry and Lloyd mostly scores points in misogyny and stereotyping in its dumberer than dumb spirit.
